Hashtags Pros and Cons

What are the pros and cons of using hashtags on Twitter? First, understand that short messages on services such as Twitter or identi.ca may be tagged by including one or more hashtags: words or phrases prefixed with a hash symbol (#), for the purposes of allowing groups of people to easily chat or tweet about the same topic or subject.

  • PROs: The ability to create a groups on Twitter or to find real time conversations or tweets about various topics. Could be used as an easy way to find people to follow who are tweeting about topics of interests.
    CONs:
    No exclusivity on a hashtags.
    Members of Twitter overusing hashtags in one single tweet which dilutes the tweet itself or using a popular hashtag to redirect to spam (It's not the hashtags fault though).
